NUST mourns Dr Gunguwo

The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has joined the medical and academic community in mourning the passing of distinguished Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Dr Taurai Gunguwo, who died on Sunday at Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo.
Dr Gunguwo was widely regarded as a pillar of Zimbabwe's medical fraternity, with a career spanning clinical practice, teaching, and national health leadership. He joined NUST in 2009 as a lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine's Department of Anatomy and Physiology, where he served for over a decade, mentoring generations of medical students and junior doctors.
Before entering academia, he worked at United Bulawayo Hospitals, rising from junior registrar in 2004 to Consultant Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. His earlier medical service included roles at Chikombedzi Mission Hospital and Victoria Falls District Hospital.
A graduate of the University of Zimbabwe Medical School, Dr Gunguwo later attained Fellowship of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of South Africa and completed an MBA at Zimbabwe Open University, reflecting a combination of clinical expertise and leadership training.
He also contributed significantly to national health programmes, serving as a trainer in Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (EMONC) and participating in maternal health research, including maternal death reviews and HIV/AIDS-related studies.
Beyond his professional achievements, he was described as a warm, humble individual with interests in karate and soccer, and was an active member of the Zimbabwe Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
NUST leadership, staff, and students extended condolences to his family, including his wife, Dr Hilary Gunguwo, who serves at the university's Faculty of Medicine as Chairperson and Senior Lecturer in Community Medicine.
Mourners are gathered at 36 Burnside Road in Bulawayo as the country reflects on the loss of a respected academic and medical practitioner whose work impacted both education and public health in Zimbabwe.
