The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) on Thursday seized 177 boxes of suspected counterfeit Domestos bleach from a tuckshop in the city's downtown area, in a crackdown on the proliferation of fake consumer goods.
Each box contained 20 units of 750ml bottles, bringing the total number of confiscated items into the thousands.
The operation intercepted the products moments after they had been delivered by a driver to the tuckshop, suggesting a coordinated supply chain behind the distribution of the counterfeit goods.
Officials from the Consumer Protection Commission were also present and conducted on-site tests to verify the authenticity and safety of the products, amid growing concerns over potentially hazardous counterfeit items entering the market.
The tuckshop owner, whose identity has not been disclosed, was reportedly out of town in Penhalonga at the time of the raid. ZACC officials remained at the premises awaiting her return.
ZACC spokesperson, Commissioner Kindness Paradza, referred inquiries to the commission's executive secretary, Shepherd Manhivi, who indicated that a full report was still being compiled.
"I am yet to get a report on the matter from the teams on the ground, but we will provide an update once all the details are available," said Manhivi.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, with the seizure highlighting increasing risks posed by counterfeit household products to public health and consumer safety.
