Zimbabwe enters lithium value-addition era

Zimbabwe has reached a major mining milestone after the Arcadia Lithium Project recorded its first export of lithium sulphate, marking the country's - and Africa's - first production of a lithium salt.

The development signals a decisive shift away from exporting raw lithium ore toward higher-value processing, in line with government policy introduced after the 2022 ban on unprocessed lithium exports. It strengthens Zimbabwe's push to integrate more deeply into the global battery and electric vehicle supply chain.

The Arcadia project, operated by Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe under Chinese firm Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, has transitioned from exporting spodumene concentrate to producing refined lithium chemicals locally. This move is expected to increase export earnings while deepening domestic industrial capacity.

Officials and industry players view the milestone as evidence of Zimbabwe's growing role in the clean energy economy, with increasing investment flowing into downstream processing and mineral beneficiation.

The export is being described as a turning point in the country's mining sector, reflecting a broader strategy to move from raw extraction to value-added production and to position Zimbabwe as a competitive supplier of processed battery minerals globally.
