A general hand employed by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, Pets Napwaro (48), has appeared in court after allegedly stealing US$1,500 from his employer and losing the entire amount through online betting.
Napwaro pleaded guilty to unlawful entry charges when he appeared before a Harare magistrate.
The State, represented by prosecutor Takudzwa Mutyavaviri, told the court that on April 25, 2026, the complainant, Benard Kenneth Chitenje, had secured his office at the central bank's Samora Machel Avenue premises, leaving US$1,500 in a drawer before briefly leaving to purchase car parts.
During his absence, Napwaro allegedly devised a plan to steal the money. The court heard that he used a chair to gain entry through a slightly open window and accessed the office.
Once inside, he reportedly took the cash and left undetected.
The theft was discovered when Chitenje returned and found the money missing, prompting a report to the Zimbabwe Republic Police at Harare Central.
Police investigations led to Napwaro's arrest, and he later admitted to the offence. The court heard that he had gambled away the entire sum playing an online betting game known as Aviator, commonly referred to as "chindege".
The matter is before the courts for sentencing.
