Tension clouds ex-Zipra Commander's funeral

The funeral of the late Colonel (Rtd) Patron Khutshwekhaya Nketha Ndlovu has been overshadowed by allegations of intimidation and restricted media access, raising concern among war veterans and political figures.

Ndlovu, a former Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army commander, Zimbabwe National Army officer and Ibhetshu LikaZulu board member, died last Friday after a short illness. Mourners have gathered at his Pelandaba home in Bulawayo, with burial arrangements yet to be announced.

Journalists covering the funeral reported a tense atmosphere upon arrival, with media initially turned away before later being granted limited access. Reporters were allowed to interview officials from ZAPU but were restricted from engaging directly with the family.

ZAPU national chairperson John Zolani Dlamini described the situation as unprecedented.

"We are seeing pressure and intimidation. This is not something we are used to at funerals," he said, alleging that both the family and attendees were under strain.

Dlamini claimed that communication with the media had been tightly controlled and attributed this to broader political tensions.

Meanwhile, ZAPU president Sibangilizwe Nkomo paid tribute to Ndlovu, describing him as a committed liberation fighter who played a key role in early political mobilisation before undergoing military training in Tanzania and joining the armed struggle.

"He dedicated his life to the liberation of this country and remained active in national issues until his last days," Nkomo said.

He added that Ndlovu's legacy as a hero was defined by his actions rather than official recognition, while also lamenting that many liberation war veterans are only honoured after their deaths.

Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Judith Ncube acknowledged Ndlovu's contribution, thanking his family for his service during and after the liberation struggle.

"As government, we appreciate his role in the army and his dedication to the country," she said.

However, Ncube said she was not aware of any reports of intimidation or restricted access at the funeral.

Authorities say the family will determine the burial arrangements, with government expected to follow their lead.

Ndlovu is remembered within liberation circles as a disciplined and principled commander who remained committed to veterans' welfare and national discourse throughout his life.
