Equatorial Guinea's Obiang Nguema Mbasogo visits Mnangagwa

President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo is expected to arrive in Zimbabwe this weekend for a high-level State Visit aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation between Zimbabwe and Equatorial Guinea.
The two-day visit, scheduled for May 9 to 10, 2026, comes at the invitation of President Emmerson Mnangagwa and follows Mnangagwa's own trip to Equatorial Guinea in February 2023.
Zimbabwe's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade said the visit reflects growing diplomatic and economic ties between the two African nations and is expected to culminate in new cooperation agreements across several strategic sectors.
At the centre of the visit will be the inaugural session of the Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation (JPCC), a bilateral platform designed to transform political relations into practical economic collaboration.
The commission will be co-chaired by Zimbabwe's Foreign Affairs Minister Amon Murwira and Equatorial Guinea's Foreign Minister Simeon Oyono Sono Angue.
Senior government officials from both countries have already begun preparatory meetings in Harare ahead of the leaders' formal engagements.
According to the Ministry, discussions will focus on reviewing progress made on agreements signed during Mnangagwa's 2023 visit while exploring fresh investment and cooperation opportunities in energy, mining, transport, agriculture, fisheries, tourism and infrastructure development.
The talks are also expected to examine opportunities within the digital economy as both governments seek to expand economic diversification and industrial cooperation.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Philisiwe Chidawanyika said the State Visit highlights a shared commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and advancing cooperation within broader African and multilateral frameworks.
"His Excellency Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa and the people of Zimbabwe warmly welcome His Excellency President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo and his delegation," the ministry said in a statement.
Political and economic analysts say the engagement reflects Zimbabwe's continued strategy of strengthening diplomatic and economic relations across Africa as it seeks new investment partnerships and expanded regional cooperation.
Equatorial Guinea, one of Africa's major oil-producing nations, has increasingly sought broader economic partnerships beyond hydrocarbons, while Zimbabwe is pursuing investment into mining, energy infrastructure and industrial development.
The visit is expected to conclude with the signing of additional Memoranda of Understanding aimed at consolidating cooperation in both the physical and digital economies.
