An official commissioning event at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals on Friday took an unusual turn after nurses were reportedly invited to dance for cash in the presence of senior government and business figures.

The event, held at Adlam House, was part of the commissioning of new hospital infrastructure attended ahead of the expected arrival of Emmerson Mnangagwa.

During the proceedings, Tinotenda Tungwarara -  daughter of presidential investment adviser Paul Tungwarara — reportedly encouraged nurses to take part in dancing activity, with participants later receiving US$100 notes from organisers amid cheering from onlookers.

Tinotenda, who is described as a young chief executive of Prevail Mart and Tap-and-Go, also announced additional support for health workers, including monthly food hampers.

"Through one of our sister companies Prevail Mart, I have been advised that the Prevail Mart company is also going to provide 3,500 hampers to the hospital workers at Parirenyatwa and we will continue to do so every month until we finish the renovations," she said.

The initiative comes at a time when public hospital workers have raised concerns over salaries, shortages of medicines and deteriorating working conditions. Nurses at public hospitals have staged industrial action in recent weeks over pay and supply shortages.

Prevail Group, which is involved in renovation works at Parirenyatwa, has also announced a two-year maintenance programme for upgraded nurses' residences and is reportedly involved in infrastructure works beyond the hospital precinct.

The company is also linked to resurfacing works along Mazoe Street in Harare.

While details of the renovation contract value remain undisclosed, Prevail Group is expected to undertake broader refurbishment projects at Parirenyatwa, including the Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Ward.

The event has drawn attention due to the blending of public health infrastructure commissioning with cash incentives and entertainment-style participation by hospital staff.
