Dinson Iron and Steel is rapidly becoming one of Zimbabwe's largest industrial operations as the country intensifies efforts toward industrialisation and value addition under the National Development Strategy Two (NDS2). The multi-billion-dollar project in Manhize is now more than 70 percent complete, with production activities already underway and thousands of jobs being created.

The integrated steel plant is expected to produce 1.2 million metric tonnes of steel annually once fully operational. The project includes an entire steel manufacturing value chain comprising a raw material complex, sintering plant, blast furnace, pig iron processing section, steelmaking facilities and rolling mills.

Towering blast furnaces, expanding production lines and active machinery now dominate the Manhize landscape as the project scales up operations. The plant is already producing hot wire rods, mining steel mill balls, water and gas pipes, bolts and nuts, products that Zimbabwe previously relied on imports for.

Chief Executive Officer Mr Ben Xu described the project as Zimbabwe's biggest strategic industrial investment under NDS2, adding that 95 percent of employees are Zimbabweans, with more than 90 percent coming from surrounding local communities.

The project is also creating employment opportunities and facilitating skills transfer among local youths and workers, many of whom have reportedly moved into critical technical positions after receiving training and experience at the plant.

Project Manager Mr Wilfred Motsi said steel remains a strategic product that supports infrastructure development, manufacturing and value addition. He said the expansion of steel production is opening opportunities for both upstream and downstream industries while strengthening the economy through import substitution and local processing of raw materials.

The Manhize project is increasingly being positioned as a symbol of Zimbabwe's broader push to industrialise, reduce raw mineral exports and expand domestic manufacturing capacity in line with Vision 2030.
