A 28-year-old woman from Nyanga escaped jail time after she was convicted of assaulting and biting her co-wife during a domestic dispute in a polygamous marriage.

Nunurai Makaza, of Taibu Village under Chief Katerere, pleaded guilty to physical abuse when she appeared before Nyanga magistrate Notebulgar Muchineripi.

She was charged under the Domestic Violence Act after attacking her co-wife, Loveness Nyakabwi.

The court sentenced Makaza to eight months imprisonment, wholly suspended on condition that she performs 210 hours of community service at Avilla Mission Hospital.

Prosecutor Nyasha Sesenyai told the court that the dispute erupted after Nyakabwi demanded the return of her carpet, which Makaza had reportedly been using.

"The accused person and the complainant stay together and are co-wives in a polygamous marriage. On April 27 2026, Makaza and Nyakabwi were at home when the complainant approached the accused requesting for her carpet, which was being used by the accused," the prosecutor said.

A misunderstanding reportedly followed, during which Makaza allegedly slapped Nyakabwi twice before biting her on the forehead, causing a deep wound.

The matter was reported to police and the complainant was referred for medical treatment.

In a separate case, another Nyanga woman was convicted for repeatedly harassing her former husband in violation of a court-issued protection order.

Getrude Kutsanza, 51, of Tadoka Village under Chief Hata, pleaded guilty to two counts of failing to comply with a protection order granted by the Nyanga Magistrates Court.

The complainant was identified as her former husband, Ben Sithole.

Magistrate Muchineripi sentenced Kutsanza to four months imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years on condition that she does not commit a similar offence.

The court heard that despite the protection order barring her from insulting, threatening or harassing Sithole, Kutsanza allegedly entered his bedroom on two separate occasions and verbally abused him.

According to the prosecution, she insulted him using offensive language accusing him of infidelity, thereby breaching the court order.
