The Zimbabwe Republic Police says more than 70 suspects were arrested during a major security operation targeting criminal activities and illegal mining operations in Mazowe.
According to police, 79 suspects were arrested on Saturday for offences ranging from illegal mining to destruction of infrastructure and other criminal activities.
Among those arrested were four suspects accused of vandalising railway infrastructure.
National police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said the operation formed part of an intensified nationwide crackdown against organised criminal activities and environmental destruction.
"The Zimbabwe Republic Police has conducted a massive operation against criminal acts such as murder, robbery, rape, stock theft, among others in Mazowe mining areas," said Commissioner Nyathi.
"The operation also targeted land degradation, soil erosion, destruction of railway infrastructure, road and water systems."
Police recovered a range of equipment allegedly linked to illegal mining activities, including 30 excavators, 10 generators, seven hammer mills, six winders, submersible pumps and multiple water tanks.
Authorities said both foreign nationals and Zimbabwean citizens were arrested in the Storeys area of Mazowe for alleged alluvial mining activities blamed for damaging water systems and agricultural land.
The operation targeted several areas, including Storeys, Jumbo Mine and surrounding mining settlements.
Police also dismantled illegal drinking spots commonly known as shebeens and confiscated meat, alcohol, illicit brews and groceries believed to be linked to criminal activities in the area.
"These activities are believed to be contributing to criminal acts in the area," Commissioner Nyathi said.
The crackdown was not limited to Mashonaland Central Province.
In Manicaland Province, police recovered generators, excavators, submersible pumps, fuel tanks, three Howo trucks and two Toyota Prado vehicles allegedly connected to illegal mining activities.
Meanwhile, in Bulawayo, officers recovered compressors, generators and concrete breakers during related operations.
Police say operations against illegal mining, environmental destruction and organised criminal activities will continue across the country.
