The Zimbabwe Republic Police has dismissed as fake a circulating press statement purporting to provide updates on alleged assailants linked to lawyer and politician Douglas Coltart.
Police said the document, dated May 11, 2026, was not issued by the ZRP and warned the public against sharing fabricated statements falsely presented as official police communication.
"The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has not issued any official press statement regarding updates on the alleged assailants of Douglas Coltart," the police said.
Authorities confirmed that investigations are underway to identify the individuals responsible for creating and circulating the fake statement, which reportedly contained inflammatory allegations connected to the case.
"The police are fully aware of these activities," the ZRP said, adding that legal action would be taken against anyone found publishing or distributing false information.
Police urged members of the public to rely only on verified ZRP communication channels for updates on criminal investigations and security matters.
The incident has heightened concerns over misinformation and the spread of forged official documents on social media, particularly in politically sensitive matters.
