The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested four suspects for allegedly transporting explosives and hazardous substances illegally along the Bulawayo–Plumtree Road.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi identified the suspects as Brighton Chimbidzika (40), Takunda Dzichauya (24), Meksen Ncube (70) and Giant Mudimba (49).
According to police, the suspects were travelling on a bus that was intercepted at a security roadblock at the 13-kilometre peg along the Bulawayo–Plumtree Road.
Commissioner Nyathi said alert officers discovered that the group was allegedly transporting explosives and hazardous substances without the licences and permits required under the Explosives Act [Chapter 10:08] and Statutory Instrument 268 of 2018.
"The bus was intercepted at a security roadblock at the 13 kilometre peg along Bulawayo-Plumtree Road, leading to the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of hazardous substances and explosives," Nyathi said.
Police recovered several dangerous materials, including sodium cyanide, caustic soda, Hydrox 500 chemicals, emulsions and capped fuses.
Authorities said the arrests form part of an intensified nationwide crackdown on the illegal transportation of explosives and hazardous substances following last month's fatal explosion involving a Toyota Quantum vehicle along the Bulawayo–Esigodini Road, which killed all occupants on board.
The ZRP warned that transporting explosives and hazardous chemicals in public service vehicles poses a major danger to passengers, motorists and surrounding communities.
Commissioner Nyathi urged transport operators and bus crews not to carry explosives, detonators, cyanide and other hazardous substances without lawful authority and compliance with safety regulations.
"Offenders will be arrested and prosecuted without fear or favour," he warned.
Police also cautioned mining firms, suppliers and chemical companies against selling explosives, detonators, cyanide and related hazardous materials to individuals or entities without valid permits, licences and verification documents required by law.
