The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested 530 motorcyclists across the country as part of an ongoing operation targeting unregistered motorcycles and violations of road traffic laws.
In a statement issued on Saturday, police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the arrests were made under the nationwide enforcement campaign dubbed "Register Motor-Bikes and Wear Helmets."
According to the police, 447 of those arrested were operating unregistered or plateless motorcycles, while a further 83 were apprehended for riding without protective helmets.
Nyathi said the operation was launched in response to continued disregard for road traffic regulations by some motorcyclists despite repeated awareness campaigns and warnings from authorities.
"The Zimbabwe Republic Police informs the public that, as part of the ongoing nationwide operation dubbed ‘Register Motor-Bikes and Wear Helmets', a total of 530 arrests have so far been made," he said.
"Of these, 447 arrests are for operating unregistered or plateless motorcycles, while 83 arrests are for riding motorcycles without protective helmets."
Police expressed concern over persistent traffic violations by motorcycle riders, noting that some continue to operate illegally while engaging in dangerous practices on public roads.
Authorities said common offences include carrying excess passengers, riding without safety gear and reckless driving, all of which increase the risk of accidents and injuries.
"The police have noted with concern that some motorcyclists continue to disregard road traffic laws by operating unregistered motorcycles, failing to wear helmets, carrying excess passengers and engaging in reckless riding conduct," Nyathi said.
He reminded riders, passengers and other road users that compliance with the Road Traffic Act and related regulations is mandatory.
The police warned that the enforcement exercise will continue nationwide, with officers conducting regular roadblocks, inspections and compliance checks aimed at improving road safety.
Nyathi said anyone found violating traffic laws would face arrest and prosecution.
"The public is advised that the current operation will continue across the country, with police officers conducting regular compliance checks and enforcement activities for the safety of Zimbabweans," he said.
"Those found violating road traffic regulations will be arrested without fear or favour."
The crackdown comes amid growing concerns over the increasing use of unregistered motorcycles and the rising number of road accidents involving riders who fail to observe basic safety requirements.
