Three bodies were retrieved from a pool of sewerage in Budiriro 3, Harare, over the weekend in a tragic incident that has sparked calls for a thorough investigation into safety measures at sewer repair sites.
According to witnesses, the grim discovery unfolded after two young men were walking home from nearby shops when one of them reportedly stepped onto what he believed was solid ground, only to fall into the sewerage-filled excavation.
The second man immediately alerted emergency services, prompting a rescue operation at the scene.
"Emergency Services came, and the diver went into the pool looking for the young man," a source at the scene said.
"Instead, the rescue diver retrieved the body of a young woman who had reportedly disappeared around 6pm the previous day while going to local shops."
The search then took an even more disturbing turn when the diver recovered the body of an older man during a second attempt.
On a third dive, emergency personnel located and retrieved the body of the young man whose fall into the pool had triggered the rescue operation.
Residents allege that the pool had formed around an open excavation left by workers carrying out sewer line repairs in the area, raising concerns about public safety and the adequacy of warning signs or protective barriers.
Harare City Council spokesperson Stanley Gama confirmed the incident and said investigations were underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Harare Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume described the incident as shocking and called for a comprehensive inquiry into what transpired.
Police have since launched investigations and are withholding the identities of the deceased pending notification of their next of kin.
The incident has reignited concerns among residents about infrastructure maintenance, public safety and the dangers posed by unattended excavations in residential areas.
