Zanu-PF is mourning the deaths of six liberation war veterans who passed away during the first week of June and have all been declared liberation war heroes.

The deaths were announced by Zanu-PF Bulawayo provincial chairperson Jabulani Sibanda, who confirmed the hero status of the deceased veterans and paid tribute to their contribution to Zimbabwe's liberation struggle.

The first death recorded was that of Marko Mpofu, whose liberation war pseudonym was Pistol Sibaphethe. He died on June 1 in Magwegwe, Bulawayo.

On June 2, Collen Lupondo, known during the liberation struggle by the pseudonym Mfanekhaya, died at Lookout Masuku Barracks.

Sibanda also confirmed the death of Common Mabhena, whose pseudonym was Common, and announced that he had been accorded liberation war hero status.

"This letter serves to confirm that the late Common Mabhena, pseudo name Common, was a liberation war hero. He passed away on June 5 at Esigodini District Hospital in Umzingwane. Mabhena will be laid to rest at Nkulumane Heroes Acre on June 9," Sibanda said.

Another veteran, Enock Mlalazi, whose liberation war name was Samson Ncube, also died on June 5. He is expected to be buried at Gungwe Village in Tsholotsho.

On June 4, Samson Naison Machukera Sithole, known during the liberation struggle as Same Bvumai, died at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo.

The sixth veteran, Emerencia Chinowaita, died in Makokoba, Bulawayo.

The deaths have been met with sadness within the ruling party and among liberation war veterans, with tributes highlighting the role the departed cadres played during Zimbabwe's struggle for independence.

Zanu-PF officials said the veterans would be remembered for their sacrifices and commitment to the liberation of the country, which culminated in Zimbabwe's independence in 1980.

Funeral and burial arrangements for the deceased veterans have been conducted in accordance with their liberation war hero status, with party members, relatives and community members expected to attend ceremonies honouring their contribution to the nation.
