A major US$600 million industrial investment is taking shape on the outskirts of Norton, where a 210-megawatt thermal power plant is under construction as part of an ambitious industrial park development spearheaded by Chinese investor Bronxmen Industrial Park.

The project, situated under Chegutu Rural District, combines power generation with manufacturing and is expected to play a significant role in strengthening Zimbabwe's energy security and industrial capacity.

The first phase of the power plant is scheduled for commissioning in September this year and will initially produce 60 megawatts of electricity.

According to Bronxmen Industrial Park public relations manager Mr Youliang Xiao, 40 megawatts from the first phase will be supplied to the national grid, providing much-needed relief to Zimbabwe's electricity supply challenges.

The power station forms part of a broader industrial complex that will also house cement and fertiliser manufacturing facilities, creating an integrated industrial hub aimed at supporting economic growth and job creation.

Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Marian Chombo toured the project site and reaffirmed Government's commitment to supporting the investment.

She said the development has the potential to transform Mashonaland West into a strategic energy and industrial centre while contributing to national economic development goals.

"This project is a significant investment that aligns with Government's industrialisation agenda and efforts to increase power generation capacity. We remain committed to creating a conducive environment for investors," she said.

Parts of the industrial park are already operational. Tile manufacturing is underway at Sunny Yi Feng, one of the park's anchor industries, which currently employs more than 1,500 workers.

Officials say the completion of the power plant and associated manufacturing facilities is expected to stimulate further investment, create additional employment opportunities and enhance local value addition in key sectors such as construction and agriculture.

The project comes at a time when Zimbabwe is seeking to expand electricity generation capacity to meet growing demand from households, mining operations and industrial users, while also attracting large-scale investments to drive economic growth.
