A Beitbridge man has been sentenced to an effective 54 months in prison after being convicted of attempting to murder his estranged wife, a Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) officer, during a violent attack in the border town.
Tinos Chanyepa (38) was sentenced by Beitbridge Regional Magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba after he was found guilty of stabbing and assaulting Primerose Kondo (28) on April 11, 2026.
The court imposed a 60-month prison sentence, with six months suspended, leaving Chanyepa to serve an effective four-and-a-half years behind bars.
The court heard that Chanyepa and Kondo were estranged at the time of the incident.
According to evidence presented during trial, Chanyepa went to Kondo's residence on April 11, but she asked him to leave.
The following day, the pair encountered each other in Beitbridge town. Chanyepa reportedly boarded Kondo's vehicle and requested that she drive him to the Masvingo turn-off, where he intended to find transport to Harare.
However, upon reaching the destination, an argument erupted after Chanyepa questioned why Kondo had refused to accommodate him at her home.
Kondo reportedly told him that she needed space following their separation, a response that allegedly angered Chanyepa.
The court heard that Chanyepa then produced a kitchen knife and stabbed Kondo once on the shoulder before repeatedly assaulting her.
Despite her injuries, Kondo pleaded with Chanyepa to take her to hospital. During the journey, he allegedly stopped the vehicle and disposed of the knife used in the attack.
Kondo subsequently drove herself to a medical facility for treatment.
Following investigations, Chanyepa was arrested, prosecuted and ultimately convicted of attempted murder.
The State was represented by prosecutor Olivia Chamutinya.
The case highlights the continued prevalence of domestic violence-related offences, with authorities urging individuals to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving disputes arising from relationship breakdowns.
