A 43-year-old man from Magenya Village under Chief Zimuto in Masvingo has died after allegedly being assaulted during a dispute over a US$1 debt arising from mice he had reportedly sold on credit.

Kudakwashe Dhewa, the Masvingo provincial police spokesperson, confirmed the death of Taurai Deredzai and said investigations into the incident are continuing.

"I can confirm the death of Taurai Deredzai of Magenya Village under Chief Zimuto in Masvingo. Investigations are continuing, and we appeal to members of the public to assist with information that may lead to the arrest of Tedious Mupopa, who is still on the run," said Inspector Dhewa.

According to police, the incident has its origins in a transaction that allegedly took place on June 7, 2026, at approximately 10am at Dure Business Centre.

Police allege that brothers Moses Mupopa (22) and Tedious Mupopa (20), both from Magaya Village under Chief Makumbe in Buhera, approached Deredzai seeking to purchase mice on credit. Deredzai reportedly agreed to the arrangement.

Two days later, on June 9 at around 8:30pm, the three men allegedly met again at Dure Business Centre, where Deredzai demanded payment for the mice.

Police say the demand led to an argument.

It is alleged that during the altercation, Moses and Tedious seized Deredzai's crutches and used them, together with a whip, to assault him.

Deredzai sustained serious injuries and was initially treated at a local clinic. However, his condition reportedly deteriorated, leading to his transfer to Masvingo Provincial Hospital on June 11.

He later succumbed to his injuries.

The matter was reported to the police, resulting in the arrest of Moses Mupopa.

Tedious Mupopa had not been arrested at the time of reporting and remains wanted by police.

Authorities have appealed to members of the public with information regarding his whereabouts to assist law enforcement as investigations continue.

The case highlights the potentially tragic consequences of disputes escalating into violence, with police urging communities to resolve disagreements through lawful and peaceful means.
