A Victoria Falls man has been arrested for allegedly hunting and selling guinea fowl meat following a sting operation conducted by wildlife authorities.

The arrest follows investigations by the Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit after receiving information that a local resident was allegedly involved in the large-scale slaughter and sale of guinea fowl meat in the resort town.

According to the Anti-Poaching Unit, investigators were told that the suspect was selling as much as two 50kg sacks of guinea fowl meat every week, raising serious concerns about the scale of the alleged illegal activity and its impact on local wildlife.

Authorities launched an investigation that included nearly two weeks of surveillance before carrying out a sting operation, which resulted in the arrest of the suspect and the recovery of 11 guinea fowl carcasses.

The Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit described the alleged level of poaching as alarming and unsustainable, warning that guinea fowl play an important ecological role and that unchecked harvesting could have serious consequences for local biodiversity.

The unit further noted that the suspect is gainfully employed, alleging that the illegal activity appeared to have been driven by financial gain rather than subsistence needs.

Conservationists have also expressed concern that the recent favourable rainy season, which has boosted wildlife populations, has inadvertently increased the vulnerability of species such as guinea fowl to illegal hunting.

The Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit commended officers from the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) for their swift response and collaboration during the investigation.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to combating wildlife crime and urged members of the public to report suspected poaching activities to help protect Zimbabwe's natural heritage.
