The rehabilitation of the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway is nearing completion, with 550.1 kilometres of the 580-kilometre route now upgraded and opened to traffic, leaving just 31.9 kilometres to be completed before the end of the year.
The project is one of the flagship infrastructure initiatives under President Emmerson Mnangagwa's administration, alongside the modernisation of the Beitbridge Border Post, which has already been commissioned and has significantly improved the movement of travellers and commercial traffic through one of the busiest border crossings in the SADC region.
In a progress update issued on 14 July 2026, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development confirmed that an additional three-kilometre stretch had recently been completed and opened to motorists.
"Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge Road rehabilitation and upgrading project progress as of July 14, 2026: a 3km stretch was completed and opened to traffic, bringing the total to 550.1km completed and opened to traffic. Only 31.9km remains to complete the project," the ministry said.
The rehabilitation works have been carried out by five local contractors. Bitumen World has completed 130.3km, Fossil Contracting has rehabilitated 122.6km, Masimba Holdings has completed 102km, Exodus & Company has finished 98km, while Tensor Systems has completed 90km. A 7.2km trial section has also been completed.
The highway upgrade forms part of the broader North-South Corridor Modernisation Programme, which includes the rehabilitation and eventual dualisation of the Harare-Chirundu Highway, the development of the Harare Ring Road, and the construction of toll plazas that will finance the rehabilitation and long-term maintenance of the road network.
Meanwhile, major infrastructure works are continuing in Masvingo, where construction of the Trumpet Interchange, Chimusana Bridge and an urban bypass is progressing near the recently commissioned Mucheke River Bridge.
Located close to Masvingo Polytechnic, the interchange is being designed as a grade-separated junction that will allow traffic travelling to Beitbridge to bypass the Masvingo Central Business District, easing congestion and improving safety.
The Trumpet Interchange, being constructed by Masimba Holdings and Fossil Contracting, forms part of the final phase of the Harare-Beitbridge Highway upgrade and is expected to significantly improve traffic flow, reduce accidents at busy intersections and shorten travel times for motorists using Zimbabwe's busiest transport corridor.
