Former Daily News editor Geoffrey Nyarota's bid to enter Zimbabwe's politics took a severe knock when he was resoundingly rejected by MDC-T supporters in Makoni South during the party's elections at the weekend.
Nyarota polled a paltry 49 votes against Pishai Muchauraya's emphatic 447 voters.
Muchauraya, accused by Nyarota of a threat to kill him, was in police custody as the confirmation process was held.
24 MDC-T MPs including the former education secretary Fidelis Mhashu and Science Minister Heneri Dzinotyiwei failed to win confirmations by their constituencies and will now face full-blown primary elections.
The MDC-T led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai introduced a system in which incumbent MPs must face a confidence vote from constituency officials, with those failing this test facing a primary election as happened in constituencies where the party has no control.
The party's organising secretary Nelson Chamisa sais that 27 MPs - including Mhashu and Dzinotyiwei - had been rejected by constituents triggering primaries which should be held over the weekend.
The MDC-T held primary elections in seats where it had no MPs two weeks ago, and top officials will be hoping to navigate the divisive primary elections in the 27 constituencies as the countries braces for general elections next month.
