Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Thursday dismissed allegations that seven MDC-T supporters were attacked by Zanu-PF supporters in Chitungwiza in a case said to be politically motivated violence.

Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said the allegations published in a local daily were misleading.

She said there were only four MDC-T supporters who were attacked by unknown assailants.

"The allegations that seven MDC activists were attacked by the suspected Zanu-PF supporters are unfactual and exaggerated," said Snr Asst Comm Charamba.

"In actual fact, four MDC-T supporters were attacked by unknown assailants. They made a report at Chitungwiza police station. Police responded and attended the scene. They managed to arrest one accused person.

Snr Asst Comm Charamba said three of the MDC-T supporters were given medical forms and instructed to go Chitungwiza Central Hospital for medical attention.

"They never went to the hospital, instead they decided to report to NewsDay," she said.

"Police acted professionally by receiving the report and opening a docket. Investigations are in progress.

"The Zimbabwe Republic Police is concerned with such newspaper headlines which are meant to cause alarm and despondence."

NewsDay alleged that the assaults took place at a housing co-operative established by Zanu-PF parliamentary aspirant Christopher Chigumba.

It said the MDC-T activists had gone to the area to put up campaign posters and distribute fliers of their party.
