HARARE - Aaron Muzungu, spokesperson for Job Sikhala's MDC-99, has been jailed for an effective five years after being found guilty of stealing a car from a Croco Holdings vehicle launch.

Muzungu, 39, had been slapped with eight years in jail but three years were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence.

The court heard that on May 4, last year, Muzungu, went to Harare Sports Club where Croco Holdings was launching the new Ford Ranger T6 range of cars.

While at the launch, Muzungu misrepresented to officials that he was a potential buyer. He was given a chance to familiarise himself with the interior of the car and discovered that the keys were in the ignition.

Muzungu went on to take advantage of the laxity of security and stole the unregistered Ford Ranger that had clocked 17 km and drove away unnoticed.

After discovering the offence, Croco Holdings made a police report. Croco flighted a newspaper ad in the Daily News of May 12, 2012 appealing for information concerning the stolen car.

On the same day the advert was flighted, detectives received information that Muzungu had responded to the newspaper advert stating he had bought the car at the launch.

It is the State's case that detectives proceeded to Dulys Motors where Muzungu had been lured by Croco's director Farai Matsika.

Muzungu was arrested after it emerged he did not purchase the car, which had since clocked 1 380 km.
