Chaos rocks NANGO's Annual General Meeting

Serious fissures have emerged in the just ended National Association of Non-Governmental Organisation (NANGO), the umbrella body of over a thousand non-governmental organisations in the country. The Annual General Meeting which was held at Crown Plaza Hotel last Friday in Harare was abandoned as members exchanged words and disruption took over when the acting chairperson and current treasurer Paul Juru, declared himself the de-facto leader of the organization without the mandate of the general assembly which had been expected to be an elective one.
A faction led by current secretary-general, Michael Mabwe and youth sector representative Dumisani Dube were apparently tipped for victory in the by-elections which had been duly advertised for. The two were respectively vying for the roles of chairperson and secretary general of country's apex formation for NGO's. They seemed to have the backing of hundreds of members who were expressing disgruntlement in what they were saying is a vacuum and lack of resolute leadership after the unexpected departure of the previous chairperson, Effie Ncube and his vice, Getrude Chimange in unclear circumstances days before the harmonized elections last month which has plunged the organization into a constitutional crisis.
Popular activist Michael Mabwe took to his Facebook page and said, "They (current board leadership) don't have any moral ground to criticize politicians. They ran away from an election they spent one and half months preparing for. They need to take a moral bath."
Dumisani Dube, the current youth chair had this to say, "This is absurd. Leadership should be accountable to the aspirations of its membership. NANGO should reflect all its sectors and regions and failure for reform mean we will continue to increase the heat on the leadership."
The AGM's programme had listed the by-elections of the chair and vice chairperson's posts as part of the agenda but Juru reportedly called the meeting to a close and fled the scene leaving the length and breadth of membership who had travelled from all over the country furious.
