A 61-year-old woman from Masvingo's Mucheke suburb was run over by a Noah vehicle fleeing from the municipal police.
The accident confirmed by Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero occurred on Friday last week at 11.55am but the woman died on Sunday.
Insp Zhanero said a docket has been opened against the driver and he would appear in court soon facing a charge of culpable homicide.
The deceased has been identified as Anna Mageza of 14 Old Railways, Mucheke A.
She was buried at her rural home in Zaka District on Monday.
According to Mageza's son, Courteous Tega her mother was hit by a Toyota Noah vehicle driven by Edward Mundende (19) of Mucheke at Benjamin Burombo commuter omnibus terminus.
The vehicle had one passenger on board when the tragedy struck.
"My mother who could not see properly was hit by Mundende's vehicle while trying to flee from municipal police.
He quickly reversed without checking and hit three pedestrians including my mother," he said.
Mundende then rushed the trio to Masvingo General Hospital where Mageza died later.
There is a fierce debate over the move to block ex-Japanese people carriers such as Toyota Granvia, Noah, Elgrande, Regius and Ipsum from the public transport system with the police saying such vehicles were not allowed to ply the country's highways.
There are also widespread concerns that such vehicles were increasingly involved in fatal accidents and that they were also being used by criminals in robberies and kidnappings.
Meanwhile, Mr Tega said although Mundende was cooperating family members were looking forward to getting compensation.
