AN attempt to restrain three cousins from fighting his brother turned fatal for a Masvingo man after he was allegedly murdered by the trio in a revenge attack during a beer drink.
Zvinowanda Zvinowanda, 41, was helping his brother, Edward, 33, when he was beaten to death. When they turned on him, the assailants also accused him of having wrecked one of the suspect's marriage in 2007.
Acting Masvingo police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nkululeko Nduna confirmed the incident and said the suspects are still on the run.
"Zvinowanda's body was taken to Morgenster Hospital mortuary for postmortem by police at Muchakata station while Edward was rushed to the same hospital where he is receiving treatment.
"His condition is said to be stable," said Asst Insp Nduna.
According to a witness, Lesley Mutonodza, a villager from the same area, Benard Makuchete, 33, Richard Makuchete, 28, and Rabson Makuchete, 25, were drinking a traditional brew when the two Zvinowanda brothers arrived.
At around 3PM, Benard approached Edward and asked him why he had previously assaulted him, but the latter professed ignorance about the matter.
Edward was then attacked by the trio and an attempt by Zvinowanda to intervene backfired as he was allegedly murdered by the men who are now on the run.
Another villager who asked not to be named said the suspects accused Zvinowanda of having previously committed adultery.
"After Zvinowanda managed to stop the fight, the trio turned against him accusing him of having had an illicit affair with Benard's wife sometime in 2007. They claimed that Zvinowanda's philandering with the wife in question resulted in the breakdown of his marriage.
"The three also accused him (Zvinowanda) of casting a bad spell on their family," he said.
Edward and Zvinowanda then left, but the trio waylaid the pair near a footpath.
"Suddenly the trio emerged before confronting the pair. Zvinowanda collapsed during the assault but his assailants were undeterred.
"They continued beating him up until he died," he said.
Upon realising that Zvinowanda was unconscious, they ordered Edward, who was also badly injured, to go home before they all disappeared into the darkness at around 8PM.
Zvinowanda sustained deep cuts on the face, head and bruises on the chest and stomach from the attack.
