Harare socialite and businessperson known for his penchant for lavish parties, Genius Kadungure, was on Thursday arrested on allegations of fraud, The Zimbabwe Mail reported.
The businessman, popularly known for flaunting his wealth and splashing on luxury, according to police sources was held up for defrauding top Zanu-PF politicians through "dubious" tenders claiming he was fronting a state-owned diamond company.
Although the police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) spokesperson, Portia Chinho had promised to provide finer details of the case, she had not done so at the time of going to print. However, it is understood that Kadungure spent Thursday night in police cells and detectives were probing fraud allegations levelled against him.
"He is assisting police with investigations as he is accused of defrauding a number of politicians and businesspersons by claiming he was fronting a diamond company," a police source said
Kadungure is famed for hosting a lavish $17 000 white birthday party in Greystone Park, Harare, in 2010.
The birthday celebrations lasted three days. The first day was an all-white party, second day being a family-only affair and finally swimming on the last day.
As if that was not enough, the young, "suave and wealthy" Kadungure broke yet another record, making it known that he has a penchant for lavishness and extravagance.
In 2011, he was accused of neglecting his son, sired with a village woman in Domboshava, claims he dismissed.
To celebrate his 28th birthday in 2012, the socialite flew 20 guests to Botswana in a party themed black and white. The party is said to have gobbled $32 000 in the plush suburb of Phakalane in Gaborone.
Last year, he held a consecutive three-day-long party at his rural home in Domboshava to celebrate his newly-built mansion he put up in the area.
