MDC-United doomed to fail, says MDC-T

Morgan Tsvangirai's MDC has slammed the United MDC (UMDC) party accusing it of being Zanu-PF agents keen to destabilise its stronghold.
The statement by Felix Mafa Sibanda, the MDC-T deputy provincial spokesperson, comes ahead of the launch of UMDC slated for Stanley Square in Bulawayo on Sunday.
Zanu-PF has over the years failed to win a single seat in the second largest city, a development Sibanda said has forced the ruling party to use the former "MDC sell-outs" to divide the Tsvangirai-led party's support base.
"It is a well-known secret that Welshman Ncube's MDC and MDC renewal are appendages of Zanu-PF. We know they have been sent," Sibanda said.
"They deliberately chose Bulawayo because they know that, this is our stronghold but I should state that this is not home to dubious formations," he said.
Jacob Mafume, spokesperson of the MDC renewal team, described Mafa's statement as "infantile...not worth the paper it is written on."
Sibanda said UMDC was a baseless party which was already in turmoil before its launch.
"The party has got no structures. That is why they are relying on road-shows to lure people to their rally. Sadly, I am receiving information that they are going around lying to people that it's a united of all opposition parties including Tsvangirai. To me it's a clear sign of desperation."
Ever since MDC renewal and Ncube's led MDC forged a pact under the re- unification banner, a plethora of predicaments have dogged the two formations in a development that has cast doubt about their future.
Recently, MDC party secretary-general Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga threw in the towel under unclear circumstances, with the deputy national chairman Frank Chamunorwa following suit, further throwing the unification process into disarray.
As things stand, more senior officials are also expected to resign.
"They have gone as far as reaching their hand to the civic society, churches and non-political organisations just to swell their numbers. And for a party worth its salt why would they go to Stanley Square and not Barbourfields Stadium if claims that they have masses are to be believed?"
He warned party supporters not to be hoodwinked into following a formation that is "dead as a dodo"
"I warn people not be taken for a ride for this project has been doomed right from the start."
Mafume said: "What we know is that the whole country is clear we need a united front and grand coalition. The last rally they held was at Stanley Square and it can't be good for them and bad for everyone else.
"Anyone who is in Bulawayo knows that the other decent venues are occupied celebrating the non-event that is Mugabe's birthday. We are not part of that, ours will be held at Stanley Square.
"They have been announcing that our project is dead for weeks but we are still here. The sooner they realise we are a reality, the easier it will be for them. People need solutions not how shrill one can insult fellow opposition parties. They focus on the past, we presenting the future," Mafume said.
