Mliswa appointed in Rural Teachers Union advisory board

The Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (RTUZ) has appointed its Advisory Board as part of its constitutional requirements and the capacity building resolutions of the Union. The Advisory Board will serve for a 5 year term renewable once and running parallel to the term of the National Executive Council (NEC).

The incoming Inaugural Advisory Board will be faced with the task of spearheading the institutional capacity building programme of RTUZ which is targeted at building a strong institution that can support the Union's ever expanding membership base. The Board will also play an oversight role as custodians of the Union's assets as well as advice the NEC and Congress on key institutional decisions that must be made.

The Board is composed of 5 members who are appointed and also the President and Secretary General who are ex-officio members of the Board. In appointing the Board, the NEC looked at the strategic value of the individuals so selected to the education sector in general and to rural teachers in particular.

In light of the above, the RTUZ Board which was appointed by the NEC and elected its structure on its first meeting held on 5 March 2016 at Sunshine Resort, Gevstein Park in Harare is as follows:

BOARD CHAIRPERSON – Clever Bere; a Quantity Surveyor by profession and distinguished former student leader and thriving entrepreneur. Mr Bere brings with him vast experience in activism and valuable business knowledge which will assist the Union in its investments portfolio.

VICE CHAIRPERSON - Douglas Tigere; a renowned youth activist who has led many organizations in various capacities. He brings with him immense experience of working with tertiary students which will be valuable for the Union mobilization in teachers colleges

BOARD SECRETARY- Lynette Mudehwe; a teacher by profession and former student leader. She is a effervescent human rights defender and passionate social justice activist. Ms Mudehwe brings with her strategic value to the Union's gender desk as well as the broad mobilization department.

BOARD TREASURER- Temba Mliswa; a former Member of Parliament for Hurungwe West and Chairperson of Parliamentary portfolio committee on education, sports and culture. Mr Mliswa is also thriving entrepreneur with vast experience in business management, he also has deep experience of resource mobilization and working with rural communities and this experience will be of great value to the Union's rural programmes.

BOARD MEMBER- Kumbirai Mafunda; a journalist by profession and a passionate human rights defender. Mr. Mafunda comes with years of experience in the human rights sector both as a journalist and activist. His knowledge and experience will be of immeasurable importance to the Union as its programming penetrates into the very core of human rights issues. He also has vast experience of working in rural communities and educating them on human rights issues which will be very critical for our community based programmes.
