VULINDLELA Clinic in Bulilima District re-opened yesterday after its closure on Monday following reports of goblins that were terrorising nurses.
Ministry of Health and Child Care officials shut down the clinic and nursing staff vacated the premises and removed some of the clinic's equipment following reports of the presence of goblins.
The decision to re-open the clinic was reached on Tuesday at a meeting held between traditional leaders from the area and Bulilima District Administrator, Mrs Ethel Moyo as well as Plumtree District Medical Officer, Dr Langalokusa Sibanda. Matabeleland South Provincial Medical Director, Dr Brian Maponga consented to the re-opening of the clinic.
Mrs Moyo confirmed the clinic's reopening yesterday.
The Health Ministry has secured accommodation away from the clinic, while traditional leaders have promised to ensure that a cleansing ceremony is conducted to rid the clinic of goblins that were allegedly raping nurses and patients.
Bulilima West MP, Cde Lungisani Nleya under whose constituency the clinic falls pledged to transport nurses from their new places of residence to and from work.
Mrs Moyo said the clinic was reopened yesterday and the MP had honoured his pledge.
"We held a meeting with the Plumtree District Medical Officer, Dr Langalokusa Sibanda and traditional leaders from Vulindlela Ward over the matter. The DMO called the PMD during our presence and communicated the grievances which the villagers had and he agreed that the clinic can re-open," said Mrs Moyo.
She said the nursing staff will now work at the clinic during the day and proceed to where they would have secured accommodation after work.
Mrs Moyo said traditional leaders from the area said there would be a ceremony to deal with the goblins.
She said the traditional leaders had pleaded with the health officials to reconsider the move to close the clinic as it played a crucial role in the lives of people. The area's village head, Mr Foreman Sibanda said the clinic opened in 1988 and villagers were not prepared to see it closed.
He said villagers will ensure that a cleansing ceremony is held at the clinic. The goblins allegedly sexually abused nurses and patients and also vandalised property at the clinic. The problem is alleged to have started four months ago.
