Fifty-four suspects were arrested in Brown Street in Tshwane, a notorious drug haven, over the weekend for dealing in drugs.
According to Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD) spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba, those who were arrested by the TMPD were found with dagga, nyaope, crystal meth as well as drug paraphernalia.
"One toy gun, which is presumably used in criminal activities, has been confiscated. The arrests were made during operations conducted around the area," said Mahamba.
The TMPD took the initiative to tackle the drug problem head-on, as numerous complaints have been received about the escalating drug dealing and drug use in Brown Street in the CBD.
Officers have been stationed in the street and conduct stop-and-searches on people and vehicles.
The operations in Brown Street began in mid-February and to date 101 suspects have been arrested, mostly for the possession of drugs.
"The TMPD is working very hard to promote zero tolerance to drug dealing and drug use. Anyone found in possession of any drugs or drug paraphernalia is arrested."
The TMPD is working with the Justice department to ensure that these arrests get proper convictions.
"A drug awareness campaign was also run by the TMPD and other City of Tshwane stakeholders with the aid of a bus that drove around the city, including Brown Street. Such campaigns will continue, also to help those who are addicted to drugs," Mahamba said.
"The TMPD will continue to monitor Brown Street closely every day and congratulates the officers who are dedicated to arresting people who break the law."
