AN O-Level pupil at Shangani Secondary School was lucky to escape jail life when he was fined $200 for driving without a licence and killing a passenger.
Michael Tawanda Hove (20) of Stand Number 14 Blackwaters in Shangani pleaded guilty to the offence before Gwanda magistrate Sheila Nazombe on Tuesday.
He would go to jail for 60 days if he fails to pay the fine.
He was sentenced to a further six months for culpable homicide but the sentence was wholly suspended so that Hove can perform 210 hours of community service at Shangani Primary School starting on Monday next week.
Prosecutor Getrude Zvidzai told how on 5 October last month the pupil was driving a Nissan Cabster truck along a strip road towards Shangani Mine, with four passengers on board.
He lost control of the vehicle which then veered off the road to the left and to the right and subsequently overturned and landed on its roof.
A passenger who was at the back of the truck was trapped to death while the other sustained minor injuries and was treated and discharged at Shangani Hospital.
A report was made to the police leading to the pupil's arrest. It is not known who the vehicle belonged to.
