TWO people died while five others were injured when the vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road and overturned on the 430km peg along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway on Saturday afternoon.
The officer commanding police in Victoria Falls district Chief Superintendent Jairos Chiona confirmed the death of Akombelwa Namitondo (31) of Chinotimba high-density suburb and Florence Tholakele Mathe (29) of Mkhosana in the resort town.
Namitondo and Mathe, who were both married, were coming from a cocktail bar at Lupinyu business centre adjacent to the Victoria Falls International Airport where they had gone on a drinking spree with their alleged boyfriends while their husbands were at work.
"Initial investigations by the police indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle and it veered off the road and overturned several times before landing on its side.
He said the injured were admitted at Victoria Falls District Hospital where they are said to be in a stable condition.
The vehicle was being driven by Mathe's alleged boyfriend, who works for the Victoria Falls Town Council.
He was among the injured and is believed to be in a stable condition in hospital.
When Southern Eye arrived at the scene of the accident, some traditional brew had spilled on the ground and a number of empty scud calabashes were strewn next to the dead bodies and car wreckage.
