A Harare man has been sentenced to 36 months imprisonment, with 12 months suspended, after causing a crash in Borrowdale that claimed the life of a 53-year-old passenger.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, Ernest Ringisai Mauna (39) was convicted of culpable homicide by the Harare Magistrates' Court. He will serve an effective 24 months behind bars.
The accident occurred on 14 April 2025 along Harare Drive, when Mauna, driving a Nissan Hardbody, was speeding and failed to maintain a safe distance from a Toyota Wish. His vehicle collided with the car, triggering a multi-vehicle chain reaction crash.
The collision involved several other vehicles, including a Nissan Sunny, a Powerstar heavy truck, and a Honda Fit. Tragically, Andrew Makuwaza (53), a passenger in the Nissan Sunny, died instantly when his vehicle was pushed into the oncoming lane and struck head-on by the Powerstar truck.
In addition to imprisonment, the court cancelled Mauna's driving licence classes 2, 4, and 5, effectively disqualifying him from operating both light and heavy vehicles.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, patience, and responsibility, warning that reckless driving continues to claim lives and will be punished accordingly.
"Drivers are urged to exercise caution, patience, and responsibility on the roads. Reckless driving costs lives. The law will not spare offenders who put others in danger," officials said.
