Nine out of 10 Chinese nationals who appeared in court this week for illegal possession of dangerous drugs were yesterday granted bail, while one remains in custody.

The group was arrested during a police raid on a suspected sex-and-drugs party at a lodge in Newlands, Harare.

The court denied bail to Huang Zhen, after prosecutors argued that he appeared to be the supplier. Police allegedly found 30 grams of cocaine in his possession, and the State said it has a strong case against him.

The remaining nine — Yu Hefeng, Dong Yunmei, Yang Wanwan, Wu Yuejun, Yang Qin, Fang Yue, Sun Jie, Yao Wenming and Li Zhongju — were released on US$200 bail each and ordered to report twice a week at CID Drugs.

According to prosecutors, detectives received a tip-off on September 1 about rampant drug abuse at Number 60 Knightsbridge Road, Newlands. Acting on the information, they raided the premises and found four Chinese men sniffing cocaine in a lounge.

The men allegedly implicated Zhen, who was in another lounge with others. When police entered the room, they reportedly observed the group taking turns to sniff cocaine placed on a wooden tray, using a golden playing card to cut the drug before inhaling it.

Detectives seized the cocaine, the tray, and the playing card. A search of Zhen's bag allegedly uncovered two sachets of cocaine, benzodiazepam, and crystal meth, with the recovered drugs valued at US$1,020.

The case will continue in court.
