A 73-YEAR-OLD man allegedly put on three condoms and raped his 12-year-old granddaughter, a magistrate heard.
The man, who cannot be named to protect the juvenile but is from Fort Rixon area, appeared before Gwanda regional magistrate Joseph Mabeza to answer to charges of raping his granddaughter.
He denied the rape allegations and was remanded in custody to Friday for continuation of trial.
In denying the charges, he said he had many girlfriends and would not rape such a little girl.
Prosecutor Johannes Tlou alleges that sometime in 2009, the man whose wife was sick, called the complainant into their bedroom hut. He said there is just one hut at the homestead.
"The accused person spread a blanket on the floor and removed the complainant's clothes and his, and laid the girl on the blanket. He took three condoms and put them on and raped the girl once," said Tlou.
He said the man continued raping the girl on several occasions since 2009 until July 25, 2014.
Tlou said the girl saved herself from further abuse by running away from home.
He said she intended to visit her aunt's homestead in Nkankezi area. The complainant got lost along the way and ended up at the homestead of a Neighbourhood Watch Committee member in Fort Rixon where she disclosed that she was running away from her grandfather who was sexually abusing her.
The NWC member made a report to the police leading to the arrest of the old man.
