COPPER thieves get 27 years in jail

Four copper cables thieves were yesterday jailed to a combined 27 years by Bindura regional magistrate Estere Chivasa.
Frighton Moyo, Munyaradzi Maherani, Tafadzwa Matsongabere and Luckmore Honde were given varying sentences by the magistrate after being found guilty of contravening the Electricity Act.
The master minder Moyo got nine years as he had a previous conviction for dealing in copper. Maherani and Matsongabere will serve five years each while Honde was sentnced to 8 years in prison.
The state led by Carson Kundiwona said on September 7 a crack team of officers from the police and the President's office obtained information that three men at Wayerera village in Chief Masembura's area of Bindura were transporting ZESA copper cables.
The team reacted and caught up with the accused at a police roadblock in Chinhamora and arrested them, recovering 32 metres of bunrt copper wire weighing 48 kilograms . Upon questioning, the three implicated the fourth accused Luckmore Honde as the seller of the copper, leading to his arrest.
