Business activities along Cripps Road in Graniteside came to a halt recently after abnormal load trucks passed through the area, causing widespread disruption.

Tragedy struck in Hurungwe on Friday when a container truck carrying over 20 passengers and a heavy load overturned near Kazangarare business area in Hurungwe Rural District Ward 9, Hurungwe North Constituency. Two people died instantly at the scene.

The accident occurred close to the Chikova turn-off under Headman Kamuchanga, near Zebhedhia and Kadyamatimba villages, according to eyewitnesses from the local community.

The overloaded truck, which had departed from the Harare auction floors, was transporting various farming equipment, including scotch carts, fertilizers, cement, window and door frames, as well as groceries.

"I arrived a few minutes after the accident and found the truck lying on its side after the driver lost control," said local villager Chaita Kazangarare.

Another resident, Roderick Mumba, described the horrific scene: "It was a sorry state, with people having to search for the head that was severed from the body."

Hurungwe North Member of Parliament, Pax Muringazuva, expressed his sorrow over the incident.

"It's devastating that we lost two lives on the spot. I am still awaiting more detailed information about the accident," Muringazuva said.

Although independent confirmation is pending, reports indicate that four seriously injured victims were rushed to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital, with one sustaining broken legs.

Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Inspector Ian Kowhera confirmed the accident, attributing it to human error.

"Two people died on the spot, and their bodies have been taken to Karoi mortuary," Kowhera stated in a telephone interview.

"The injured are currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital."

Inspector Kowhera urged drivers to exercise caution on the roads.

"Most road accidents are caused by human error, and we call on all drivers to respect the value of life and avoid irresponsible driving," he added.

The Harare-Chirundu highway, a vital route connecting Zimbabwe and Zambia, remains in poor condition and has been identified as a significant factor contributing to the high incidence of accidents along the corridor.
