In a separate incident, Zimbabwe Republic Police arrested three individuals on Monday over the theft of copper cables belonging to the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA).

The suspects - Jacob Mazumbunye (33) of Area 16 Dangamvura, Mutare; Tinashe Musara (31) of Zengeza 1, Chitungwiza; and Tatenda Zimwenje (25) of Unit A, Chitungwiza - were apprehended following a tip-off received by detectives from CID Rusape.

Detectives acted on information that the suspects were stealing and hiding copper cables at plot 97 Yorkshire, Headlands. Around 7 a.m., police observed the accused offloading copper cables from a Toyota Auris and loading them into a Toyota GD6 in a bush near Yorkshire Primary School in Headlands.

The police intercepted the vehicles on the Mutare-Harare road at Home Park Business Centre, between Marondera and Macheke, and arrested the trio. Officers recovered about one and a half tonnes of copper cables, transformers, and water off tap cuts.

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka confirmed that several complainants positively identified their stolen utilities, including ZESA employee Lux Bungu (54), TelOne employee Wilson Chapenduma (62), and National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) security guard Richard Muzivamai (45) from Rusape.

Investigations into both cases are ongoing.
