Will Kudakwashe Tagwirei sail this turbulent boat?

1 hr ago | 38 Views
With the entry of Kudakwashe Tagwirei, Mnangagwa's blue-eyed son who he propelled to the ZANU-PF Central Committee, the political landscape in Zimbabwe is undergoing yet another turn.

As a tenderpreneur who only understands how to pursue government contracts, Tagwirei has so far drawn criticism from some political quarters, where he is accused of leveraging his financial clout to rise to the top of the ruling party.

It is thought that Tagwirei, who was formerly referred to as Queen B during Mugabe's reign and was involved in power battles and the capture of the revolutionary party, never gave up on becoming Zanu-PF's next leader. It appears that Tagwireyi has now taken control of it with the assistance of Wucknell Chivhayo and other supporters.

Tagwireyi, who was co-opted in mid-2025, has been at the center of controversy over lavish vehicle donations to the ruling party. These gifts, valued in the tens of millions of USD, are widely viewed as efforts to buy political influence amid ZANU-PF's internal succession battles ahead of the 2027 congress and President Emmerson Mnangagwa's potential term extension to 2030.

Vice President Chiwenga and ZANU-PF spokesperson Mutsvangwa once accused Tagwireyi of buying the party, whilst staunch Zanu PF supporters frame it as "resource mobilisation" for party activities.

The party is now for sale, and the military will soon start saluting a civilian, yet during Morgan Tsvangirai's era, the army vowed not to salute a leader without war credentials. Will the military salute Tagwirei?

Recently he was again in the centre of the storm of dishing out cars like confetti to Zanu-PF branches, where most of the members saw it as vote buying.

The majority of Zimbabweans and the opposition are already uncomfortable with Kuda Tagwireyi's immature statements. Whether he is the best person to succeed Emmerson Mnangagwa is still up in the air.

As power shifts and Vice President Chiwenga, who is expected to succeed Emmerson Mnangagwa, appears to be losing the grip on power and is being marginalised and defeated, there is currently complete quiet within the Zanu-PF leadership over Tagwirei's rise to prominence.

The majority of the revolutionary party's top members believe that President Emmerson Mnangagwa forced Kudakwashe Tagwirei on them. Tagwireyi has not yet run for office. The adage "Money can't buy everything" is correct; the masses' citadel souls cannot be purchased with money.
