Lovemore Madhuku shocked unsuspecting VOA Studio 7 listeners about Ncube

ON JULY 18, NCA chairman Lovemore Madhuku shocked unsuspecting VOA Studio 7 listeners when he argued that the problem with Welshman Ncube is that he has never been voted by the people, and hence does not believe in people-driven processes.
These remarks were supposedly a response to the assertion by the MDC leader on the need to negotiate the contents of the new constitution.
Madhuku told this lie after falling into a trap set for Ncube's perennial accusers like him by right-wing elements in the media. Ncube simply said the input from the constitutional outreach process can only amount to percentages of what a full constitution will have to contain. He then suggested that the remainder be developed through inter-party negotiations. Ncube never suggested that the views collected from the Parliament-led outreach were useless and fit only for the dustbin.
The geniuses at Herald House chose to spin this assertion knowing perfectly well that God created such people as Madhuku, Douglas Togarasei Mwonzora and Munyaradzi Paul Mangwana who will never waste any opportunity to violently oppose whatever Ncube says. As usual, the three did not disappoint.
Madhuku, however, overdid his thing and uttered shocking fallacies. Arguing that Ncube has never been voted for by people is just but proof of the density of the vengeance that Madhuku has against Ncube and only the future will tell why it is so. The same argument further suggests that Madhuku might have been either away from Zimbabwe or not in touch with his faculties over the past decade.
In 1999, Ncube was made the MDC's founding Secretary General by the people. In 2000, he was voted Bulawayo North-East MP by the people. He in fact, got the highest MDC urban constituency votes nationwide. In 2005, he was voted Bulawayo East MP by the people. In 2006 he was re-elected MDC Secretary General. In 2008, he contested in Makokoba and got more than two thousand votes that were cast by the people. In 2011, he was voted MDC president by the people.
In fact Ncube has never scored less than two thousand votes in all the times he has contested elections and one can only be a patient of acute selective forgetfulness to suggest that he has never been elected by the people.
Where Ncube eventually lost elections, he accepted defeat and never clung to power against the will of the people.
However, one of the most common things about all the five elections Ncube has participated in is that Madhuku was not directly involved. He was also not directly involved in the constitution-making process and argues that the process was not people-driven. This is contrary to the records at the disposal of his fellow Ncube bashers Mwonzora and Mangwana.
The truth is that more than a thousand meetings were held countrywide in the outreach programme. These meetings were neither conducted by dogs nor attended by goats. There were people on either ends of the process, but still Madhuku argues that it was not people-driven.
The obvious question to Madhuku will be: Who are the people then? To argue that a political process headed by politicians is not people-driven would be insincerity of the highest order because politicians are not donkeys, they are people. Even the mishaps that characterised the outreach were inspired by human beings -- who are people.
Perhaps Madhuku's definition of the people is limited to those that he fathers, employs and or indoctrinates. None has been interested in reminding Madhuku that at a time when Ncube and others were embroiled in upgrading their understanding of law and writing books, he was busy abusing trust funds leading to his recently lifted excommunication from legal practice. Such a reminder should, however, not be used to compare his capacity to that of Ncube but to alert him that out there, there are people who understand his lack of sincerity when it comes to matters that concern people like trust funds.
Most shockingly is the alliance against Ncube comprising of Madhuku, Mwonzora and Mangwana. Given that Mwonzora's MDC-T and Mangwana's Zanu PF are sworn enemies and also that Mwonzora once led an ANC faction that wanted to oust Madhuku in 2006, the three's sudden brotherhood can only be explained in terms of a reality long established in the wild that in the advent of a heavy downpour, it may be necessary for snakes and monkeys to find refuge on the branches of the same tree.
Fortunately, Zimbabwe is bigger than the NCA and we are not governed by some modern day Mosaic assortment of dos and don'ts crafted solely by Madhuku and the earlier he realises that the better for us all.
For Madhuku to earn the respect of all Zimbabweans before joining mainstream politics, he must respect people when they do what they believe in. There is nothing people-driven about Madhuku, a man who has abused the NCA constitution to stay at the helm.
The question however still remains: if those who gave Ncube two terms in Parliament are not people, and if those who drove the constitution outreach exercise are not people, who then are the people Madhuku?
