Mujuru fishing from the wrong pool

12 Aug 2016 at 07:12hrs | Views
The recent attendance in the Rotten Row Magistrate' court by the Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) leader, Dr Joyce Mujuru in the bail hearing of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) spokesperson, Douglas Mahiya after he was arrested for allegedly undermining President Robert Gabriel Mugabe's authority reveals that Mujuru is desperate to get support from any quarter whatever the difficult situation might be. Mujuru has now taken upon herself to make sure that she throws her fishing line into any pool even where one sees that there is no hope to catch or bait such intended prey.

Joyce Mujuru knows quite well that luring the former freedom fighters to her base could possibly catapult her support base raising her hopes that probably she could be the next Zimbabwean leader although indications on the ground points otherwise. For the past few days Mujuru has been seen active in rallies and even issuing statements meant to entice people into believing that she can be the next thing to happen in the country. By aligning herself to the former freedom fighters is a way by Mujuru to make them totally turn against President R.G Mugabe in favour of her.

Just some few days ago, Mujuru also took President R. G. Mugabe to the High Court, challenging the government's alleged move to ban the importation of basic commodities which led to massive demonstrations countrywide. By challenging the implementation of the Statutory Instrument number 64 of 2016 which regulates the importation of basic commodities as well as building materials in the country Mujuru is luring support from the vendors in the country. She wants the vendors to think that she has come into the political field to rescue them from losing their vending business. Mujuru is quiet aware that in the vending business there are quite a number of some potential voters hence the move to oppose the implementation of the SI number 64 of 2016 in the hope of getting support from the same.

What she is quick to forget is that the economic demise of this country started way back when she was the second powerful citizen in the country. Her actions now are driven by her desire to seek the highest political position in the land which she failed to land when she was still in ZANU PF. It is clear that Mujuru is only after seeking the presidency of this country not that she is worried about the economic problems which the people are reeling under. For over a decade, Mujuru enjoyed being the VP of Zimbabwe and when the country got under one of its worst economic problems with the inflation reaching one million percent, she did not come up with solutions to such economic problems because she was enjoying the status quo by then and the comfort of government support as well as a good living. She did not resign from government because she was comfortable with what was happening during that time.

It is surprising that today the same Mujuru sees things differently as she now hinders some effort by government of regulating some importation of basic commodities and building materials by viewing that as a crime. It should be recalled that Mujuru was there when some of the alleged draconian laws were enacted by government and she did nothing to serve the situation. By then Zimbabwe was viewed by the international community as a pariah state because of some of the laws which were viewed as ant-people during Mujuru' time in government and as a VP. It boggles the mind to remember that Mujuru saw nothing amiss with such laws during that time. Now that she found herself chucked out of the ruling party she begins to see anything done by government as ant-people.

The SI number 64 of 2016 which is only trying to regulate the importation of basic commodities and some building materials is better than the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA) as well as Public Order and Security Act which were enacted during Joyce Mujuru' time in office as the VP of Zimbabwe. Mujuru saw nothing wrong with AIPPA and POSA which allegedly infringed more on the rights of the people to express themselves publicly than the SI number 64 of 2016 which is trying to protect the local industry. AIPPA which was allegedly a hindrance in the proper working environment of some media houses and some journalists was seen as the best law by Mujuru and his counterparts. She failed to raise her voice against either AIPPA or POSA just because the two laws were good for her survival in the office of the VP.

Could someone awaken Mujuru so that she is able to read and compare the effects of POSA and AIPPA which she also helped to enact and this SI number 64 of 2016? What is wrong to come up with a law protecting the local industry? Mujuru should be aware that Zimbabweans cannot keep on running the country by vending alone but the local industry should be viable so that employment is created. Those in the vending industry are just doing that because there is high employment rate in the country but if the local industry becomes viable and employment is created there would be no need to talk about vending in the country. People have resorted to vending as a means of survival. Actually they need to be gainfully employed so that they are able to contribute their savings to the pension schemes for their survival in future.

As if the move to challenge the government on the implementation of the SI number 64 of 2016 was not enough Mujuru went further recently to approach the Constitutional Court (ConCourt) challenging the government's intention to introduce some bond notes in the economy as a means of monetary exchange. Mujuru claims that the government' proposed move to introduce some bond notes is illegally hence the ConCourt should bar the availing of them to people by government. Surprisingly Mujuru has not looked at the advantages of using such bond notes but only rushed into challenging that move by government at the ConCourt as a move to please others in the opposition politics who are also against government programs.

Such a move by Mujuru shows that she has turned ant-development because she always rushes to oppose whatever the government brings forward just because she is now in opposition politics. Joyce Mujuru forgets that in 2008 people struggled to make ends meet when they were using inflationary bearer cheques but she did nothing to rescue the situation. She kept quiet yet the people were suffering. Now that she is in opposition politics she sees the bond notes as monsters forgetting that the bearer cheques were  worse than the envisaged bond notes which would come being equated with the value of the United States of America dollar(US$).

Mujuru' silence during the time when people had to spent three quarters of their daily lives in the banks` queues as to get their inflationary and useless bearer cheques in 2008 shows that she has nothing good for the people. Her current shenanigans are meant to make her confuse the people into believing that she would become a good leader. People should not forget that for the past thirty four years Mujuru was in government and leading various government departments and there is nowhere where Mujuru was seen or handpicked standing for the betterment of the people.

Now Joyce Mujuru is being vocal in the political wilderness as a means to get sympathisers so that probably she could be voted into power and fulfil her aspirations which she failed when she was in 2014 dismissed from being a VP in ZANU PF leading to the formation of her ZimPF project. So Zimbabweans should not be misled by this political opportunist as Mujuru has nothing to give back to the people but only to fulfil her political aggrandisement and her self-actualisation.
