Roman Catholic Priest killed in hit and run accident

Roman Catholic priest Father Regis Chikuni has died after he was reportedly struck by a Honda Fit while attempting to cross the road near the intersection of Prince Edward Road and Samora Machel Avenue in Harare.
Father Chikuni had been reported missing for several days before his body was discovered this week at the mortuary of Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
Police sources said the priest was not carrying any identification documents when the accident occurred, resulting in his body being taken to the hospital mortuary as authorities worked to establish his identity.
Details surrounding the accident remain sketchy, while police are expected to issue a statement on the incident.
The Archdiocese of Harare had earlier informed clergy and parishioners during a Sunday Mass that Father Chikuni was unaccounted for. A missing-person report was subsequently made to the police.
The Archdiocese later confirmed that the priest had been found deceased at Parirenyatwa Hospital.
In a statement issued through the Archbishop's Secretary, Father Ephraim Murwira, on behalf of Archbishop Robert C. Ndlovu, the Archdiocese expressed deep sadness over Father Chikuni's death.
"It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that we announce the passing on of our beloved brother, Father Regis Chikuni. Tragically, he was found deceased at the mortuary of Parirenyatwa Hospital," Father Murwira said.
He said the church was comforted by its faith in the resurrection and remembered Father Chikuni for his dedication to his pastoral duties and contribution to the community.
"His dedication to his pastoral duties and the impact he had on our community will forever be cherished in our hearts," he said.
The Archdiocese urged members of the church to come together in prayer as they mourned the priest and reflected on his life and service.
Details of Father Chikuni's funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.
"May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may we find solace in the hope of the resurrection," Father Murwira said.
