HIGHLANDERS Football Club Under-16 player Devine Khumalo has been selected to represent the country at the Copa Coca-Cola international training camp that runs from July 26-31 in Germany.
The Mzilikazi High School left winger was selected after last year's Copa Coca-Cola finals in Harare alongside Oriel Boy High School's Leeroy Willie.
Khumalo and Willie will join about 100 other youngsters from 15 countries for the training camp.
Mzilikazi High School headmaster Bhekokuhle Dube spoke highly of Khumalo.
"The boy has a bright future in football. As it is, he is the captain for his age group at Highlanders. He is going to be a brilliant footballer and we wish him all the best in Germany. As a school, we are proud that of all the schools in Zimbabwe, we have been given the honour of having one of our students selected to represent the country in Germany," said Dube.
Mzilikazi High School was the inaugural winner of the Copa Coca-Cola tournament in 1989 and went on to dominate schools soccer for a number of years. The school was widely referred to as the "School of Football Excellence".
Dube hopes that Khumalo meets his hero Thomas Muller, who plays for German champions Bayern Munich. "Khumalo told me that his wish is to meet Muller and I'm sure if he does, that will be an inspiration to the youngster," Dube said.
Dube said according to the information they received, Khumalo and other Copa Coca-Cola youngsters will train under a team of world champions at the Lindow Sports Academy.
All the participants will tour the Olympic Stadium that hosted last weekend's Uefa Champions League final between FC Barcelona of Spain and Italy's Juventus.
Head of Highlanders' junior development Dumaza Dube said the sky is the limit for Khumalo, who turns 15 years later this year.
"Devine is the captain of our Under-16 team and as a development coach we take pride in identifying and nurturing talent that gets attention at such a tender stage.
"With proper guidance, the sky can be a limit for Khumalo. Our hope is that he develops his skill in Germany and for this visit to inspire him to develop into a better player and maybe one day he will return to Europe to further his career as a footballer," said Dumaza.
