THE Castle Lager Premier Soccer League has cancelled league matches which were set for Bulawayo this weekend on the advice of the police. PSL chief executive officer Kennedy Ndebele confirmed cancellation of today's Tsholotsho FC-Mutare City Rovers' clash which had been set for Luveve Stadium and tomorrow's game between league leaders Highlanders and Triangle United.
In a statement the league's boss said security concerns raised by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) had forced the cancellation of the matches.
"This serves to advise that the following Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Fixtures have been postponed; Tsholotsho FC vs Mutare City Rovers FC, Highlanders FC vs Triangle United FC. The fixtures have been postponed following security advice from the Zimbabwe Republic Police. The said fixtures will be rescheduled in due course," said Ndebele.
The postponement of the two matches comes three days following cancellation of the epic Chicken Inn-FC Platinum clash on Wednesday. The developments are likely to see Highlanders lose their top spot on the table in the event that second placed FC Platinum who play Caps United at Mandava this afternoon win or draw.
The platinum miners are on 26 points from 11 matches. Norman Mapeza's FC Platinum will bank on midfielders Winston Mhango, Nqobizitha Masuku, Marshal Mudehwe, Ishmael Wadi and Walter Musona to lead them against Caps United.
The platinum miners also have the likes of defenders Kevin Moyo, Gift Bello and Elvis Moyo as well as forwards Brian Muzondiwa, Rodwell Chinyengetere and Tatenda Dzumbunu that they can bank on for positive results. Goalkeeper and captain Petros Mhari will be expected to start ahead of Wallace Magalane.
Caps United are no pushovers and their trump cards are midfielders Joel Ngodzo, Kudzai Nyamupfukudza and Tafadzwa Rusike, strikers Dominic Chungwa and Leonard Tsipa as well as defenders Ronald Pfumbidzai and Hardlife Zvirekwi. The winner of today's match will shoot to the top of the table.
Caps United are third with 25 points. Meanwhile, Bulawayo clubs who will be hoping to bury their poor runs are How Mine and Bulawayo City who face Harare City today and Hwange tomorrow respectively. City have gone for three consecutive league defeats and are targeting Hwange's scalp.
City's coach Philani Beefy Ncube, believes tomorrow's clash presents them an opportunity to get the break that they have been waiting for. Some of the City's strikers who are failing to turn the chances created by their midfielders include Mkhululi Moyo and Thomas Chimenya.
City also has skipper Xolisani Moyo who has been in fine form in central midfield, protecting the central defence as well as starting moves from the middle of the park. Moyo has been one of City's most consistent players and is arguably one of the best defensive midfielders in the domestic league at the moment.
Besides Moyo, City also have Sipho Dube, ex-Highlanders' Welcome Ndiweni, Manuel Mandiranga, Innocent Kutsanzira, Makhosi Ncube and utility player Brian Chikwenya competing for starting places in their midfield.
Ncube is unlikely to change his back four of Lewis Ncube, Terrence Majo and central defence pair of Zibusisio Sibanda and Nyasha Mukumbi, while goalkeeper Ndodana Sibanda who made a mess of a corner kick that resulted in Dynamos' goal may lose the starting place to Liberty Chirava.
How Mine whose last victory was on May 14 when they beat Caps United 2-1 need their seasoned players to come to the party if they're to beat Moses Chunga's Harare City. The gold miners have gone for six matches without a victory, playing draws against FC Platinum, Tsholotsho FC and Chapungu and losing to Hwange, Highlanders and Ngezi Platinum.
