FOR the first time in the history of the soccer stars selection process, 16 Premier Soccer League coaches, members of the Football Union of Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe Soccer Referees Association will join journalists from the different media houses to select the country's best players for the 2011 season.
The 2011 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Soccer Stars of the Year selection process will be held in the capital on Saturday.
This is the first time since the legendary George Shaya won the inaugural Soccer Star of the Year award back in 1969 that so many organisations have been involved in the selection of the soccer stars which over the years was done by members of the Sports Writers Association of Zimbabwe (Swaz).
Following complaints during the past few years regarding the way the selection was done, the league sponsors, Castle Lager, who came back this year after a few years sabbatical leave, decided to expand the selection panel by bringing in different experts.
Premiership chief executive officer Kenny Ndebele confirmed yesterday that 16 coaches will be part of the selection panel.
"Yes we will have all our 16 coaches together with two members from FUZ and two members from ZSRA. They will join members of the different media houses and together they will select the best players," said Ndebele.
The panelists will select the 11 outstanding players and Rookie of the Year but the coaches and referees will not take part in the selection of the Coach of the Year as well as the Referee of the Year.
For the Rookie of the Year, the panelists will select from a list of 55 Under-20 players who were playing for various clubs in the Premiership. The list will be availed during the pre-selection meeting on Saturday.
Ndebele said there will be no selection of the Goalkeeper of the Year and the Golden Boot Winner.
Dynamos striker Rodrick Mutuma has already bagged the Golden Boot Award with 14 goals while for the best pair of hands in the land, the PSL will provide a list of all the goalkeepers with the number of games played plus the total number of goals conceded.
The award will go to the goalkeeper who played the most number of games and conceded the list number of goals.
Eight finalists for the Soccer Star of the Year will walk away $1 000 richer, second runner up will get $2 000, first runner up $3 000 while the season's best player will pocket $5 000.
Mutuma is already guaranteed a cool $3 000 and his prize money will increase if he makes it to the Top 11, a big likelihood.
The Goalkeeper and Rookie of the Year will get $2 000 each, Coach of the Year will be $3 500 richer while the most excelling centre man gets $2 000, first runner-up $1 500 and the second runner-up will receive $1 000.
The most disciplined team is set to get $10 000 on top of its prize money for participating in the Premier Soccer League.
