Econet Wireless has warned its unregistered subscribers that they risk been cut off on July 13 as it attempts to comply with regulations set out by Potraz.

The telecommunication firm has the highest subscriber base in the country of more than 9 million.

In a notice the mobile network providers said: "We would like to draw your attention to Statutory Instrument 95 of 2014, also referred to as Postal and Telecommunications (Subscriber Registration) Regulations of 2014 which take into effect on the 13th of June 2014.

"The new law obliges all telecommunications service providers to disconnect all unregistered customers by the 12th of July 2014," it said.

Econet said it was compelled to verify the full names, surnames, ID number, address and identity of customers.

Foreign citizens will be required to produce a valid passport.

"Econet will also be using utility bills, lease agreements, agreements of landlords, and letters from chiefs or headmen, headmasters or letters from employers as proof of "permanent address".

"All Econet customers are required to comply with these registration requirements. Please note that any line not properly registered by 13th of July 2014 with Econet will be deactivated from the network".

Customers who wilfully provide false details risk "penalty of imprisonment or a fine of both such fine and such imprisonment".

Mobile firms periodically issue disconnection warnings and this has been the norm since 2010.

Once an unregistered SIM card is cut off, owners would not be able to make voice calls and send text messages.
