Cape Town - The Nando's comedy festival in Zimbabwe has been cancelled, reports Zimbabwe's The Standard.

According to the Zimbabwean Sunday newspaper, the cancellation of the December 15 performance comes after Nando's flighted its "Last Dictator Standing" commercial in South Africa, portraying Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe as lonely without his fellow dictator friends.

The commercial has since been pulled off air in South Africa.

The Standard reports that Nando's spokesperson, Caroline Nyadzayo, confirmed that the festival was off, saying: "It was not proper for us to continue with the event given the picture that has been painted of our organisation."

Loyiso Gola, Trevor Noah and Kagiso Lediga are some of the comedians who were to perform at the festival.

On Monday Loyiso Gola tweeted: "Our tour of Zimbabwe has been cancelled because of the Nando's ad. Wow."

Carl Joshua Ncube, a Zimbabwean stand-up comedian, was also due to perform at the Zimbabwean leg of the Nando's comedy festival.

He told The Standard: "I understand that is why it has been cancelled. I am still saddened that we are casualties of Nando's South Africa's campaign."
