Tropical Cyclone to hit Mozambique

A Tropical Cyclone is set to make landfall over the coast of Mozambique on Monday, 13 February.

This is according to Storm Report SA, forecasting that although South Africa is not in danger, a "tropical low currently forming in the Mozambique Channel and will most probably affect the extreme north-eastern parts of South Africa and the north-eastern parts of KZN.

"The Tropical Low that is developing in the Mozambique Channel has the potential to reach Cyclone strength in the next 24 hours according to NASA's Hurricane Website," Storm Report SA posted late on Sunday night, 12 February.

The Mozambique Channel, which lies between Mozambique on the African mainland and the island nation of Madagascar, appears to be coming together on satellite imagery today, NASA's Hurricane Website confirmed.

NASA's Aqua satellite captured a visible image of System 98S as it passed overhead early on Sunday. You can see the image below.

The centre was located about 505 nautical miles northeast of Maputo, Mozambique.

"The centre of circulation appears to be consolidating quickly over the warm waters of the channel. There are also strong bands of thunderstorms wrapping into the centre of circulation," NASA's report reads.

"The potential to develop into a tropical cyclone over the next 24 hours is high," they say.
