Our salaries must not be linked to President branding: ARTUZ

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has strongly condemned the branding of civil servants' salaries and benefits with President Emmerson Mnangagwa's name and title, arguing that it undermines the professionalism and independence of public service workers.

The backlash follows the announcement by Minister of Labour Edgar Moyo of a US$150 bonus for civil servants, described as a "Special Presidential Bonus," to be paid in two instalments of US$75 in November and December 2025.

"We feel insulted! Our salaries should not be linked to the branding of a sitting President who is also a civil servant like us. @edmnangagwa and his team must respect us as the professionals we are," ARTUZ posted on its X account.

The union expressed appreciation to taxpayers who fund both the President's and civil servants' salaries, but criticized the government for allegedly prioritizing politically connected individuals over hardworking public sector employees.

"We are angered that the bulk of taxpayers' contributions are being channeled to the politically connected at the expense of hardworking civil servants," the union said.

ARTUZ also accused the current administration of slashing teachers' salaries from US$540 and failing to restore them in line with rising inflation and cost of living.

"This temporary increase of income is a mockery from the elites," the union added.
